Before the 1970s, the settlement was full of life, because the inhabitants of Varbara had huts built to stay there during the summer months of the year. The old name of the sanctuaries was Olympiada, like the seaside village near Kalyvia, but when the refugees from Saint Kyriaki of Asia Minor came to claim the name as a newly established community at that time. The inhabitants of Varvaras call the wider area of Kalyves under the name of Olympias in the local dialect.

Since the 1970s, deserts have started, and various reasons, such as modern lifestyles, forced rural families to move to Varvara, while at that time, a metallurgical factory was made beside Kalyvia. In the mid-1970s, a pond lake was created and the State obliged the residents to expropriate 1600 acres of land for its creation. Nowadays, two rural families live in Kalyvia, which preserve the settlement.
