LocationAgios Prodromos

Agios Prodromos (Resetnikia or Retsinikia until 1927) is a municipal district of the municipality of Polygyros in the prefecture of Chalkidiki. The population of the village amounts to five hundred (500) inhabitants. It is remarkable that the inhabitants of the village come from different parts of Greece such as Moria, Epirus, Macedonia and Thrace.

It is located at the foot of Mount Holomontas and its distance from Polygyros is 14km and from Thessaloniki 50. The main occupations of the residents are agriculture (cereals, livestock and traditional bread), livestock farming, tourism and the services of the Municipality . The village was named after the post-Byzantine chapel of Saint Prodromus, which holds an important place for the settlement. The church celebrates on 28th and 29th of August, when the village takes place a glorious feast, gathering a lot of people. The main church is the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. On 9 May, Saint Christopher is also celebrated.

The inhabitants of Agios Prodromos participated in the revolution of 1821. Stergios Antoniou was a great fighter of the Revolution of 1821. The inhabitants of the settlement today come from different places (apart from the locals), such as the Peloponnese, Epirus and Thrace. Customs, such as the Futera, during the Epiphany days, are the most important in the village. On the eve of Epiphany, young men sing the carols by picking up meat, sausages and money, and on the day of St Ioannis they dance in the square of the village.

The sights of this place are the river that crosses the village and is surrounded by lush vegetation. There is also the beautiful square that is surrounded by taverns. Significant is the reference for the chapel of St. Prodromus, which is one of the post-Byzantine churches of Chalkidiki and has a significant value for the locals.

In Agios Prodromos you can visit the traditional, picturesque taverns where the famous souvlaki, which has been awarded by the New Zealand government, is served among other local recipes.
