LocationAgios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolas is located in Chalkidiki and belongs to the Municipality of Sithonia. The inhabitants of Saint Nikolaos are engaged in agriculture, livestock farming, fishing, beekeeping, and tourism activity is also developed. In the traditional village of Saint Nikolaos you can enjoy the picturesque paved alleys, admiring the traditional 19th century houses, which are examples of folk architecture. You can also visit the churches of St. Georgiou and St. Paraskevi, as well as the chapels of St. Nicholas, St. George and Ormos Panagias.

In the wider area of Saint Nikolaos traces of prehistoric settlements have been identified. Northeast of the current settlement, in Pyrgos, developed in the classical years the settlement of Siggo from which it was named Sigitakos Bay, later named Mount Athos, which separates the peninsulas of Sithonia and Athos. The modern village was formed by the union of two settlements: Saint Nikolaos, where refugees from Mani lived, and Saint Georgios, inhabited by locals of Chalkidiki. Among others, the name is due to the monastery of Saint Nikolaos of Chrysokamaros, the monastery of the Xenophon Monastery of Mount Athos, located at Pyrgos. The inhabitants of Saint Nikolaos participated in the revolution of 1821, among them the fighters of the Revolution of 1821 were distinguished by John (Yiannakis) Papas, Triantafyllos Asteriou, Stergios Pavlou, Dimitrios Stergianos, Athanasios Demetriou and others. The inhabitants also participated in the movement of Tsamis Karatasos in 1854. The area was liberated by the Ottomans in 1912.

Although Saint Nikolaos is a mountainous village, its coasts (more than thirty kilometers), with beautiful picturesque bays and clear sandy beaches, are a short distance from the village and stand out for the fine sand and the deep blue sea. The port of Saint Nikolaos is the small harbor, Ormos Panagias, just 2.5 km from the village, from which tourist boats make daily sailings to the peninsula of Athos, as well as small stops on the exotic island of Chalkidiki, Ammouliani and in Ouranoupolis, the gate of Mount Athos. In the picturesque taverns of Ormos they can be satisfied with the exquisite sea appetizers and the most demanding gastronomic desires accompanied by the traditional tsipouro.

Immediately after Ormos is Lagonissi with endless bays and enchanting beaches. In this location a clear-cut shallow beach provides the visitor with a magnificent view. For a vacationer who would like to dive in the most transparent sea, who would like to tan on the most beautiful sandy beach, he has only to visit the shore of the Tower. Ancient Sigos is waiting for him to offer all the modern summer pleasures. At the other end of Trani Ammouda, the partly developed beach of Livrohios Beach, with its small hotel units and tourist facilities, with its silver sand, is a safe choice for the holidaymaker who would like to swim in clear and clean waters. In the heart of the Siggitikos Gulf, between Pyrgadikia and Saint Nikolaos are the coasts: Eleonas, Kortiri and Saloniki. These are three identical, spotless, sandy beaches, with small rocky ridges stand out from each other. On the Schinias coast and 2,5 km from the settlement of Saint Nikolaos, the camping site of Chania is located. At Ormos Panagias, Trani Ammouda, Salonikiou and Lagonissi you can be accommodated in crystal clear traditional accommodation as well as fresh local fish in the local restaurants.
