LocationAgia Anastasia

Agia Anastasia is a village that belongs to the municipality of Polygyros. The village was founded in 1979 and is located at the borders of the prefectures of Chalkidiki and Thessaloniki, on the provincial road connecting Polygyros with Thessaloniki on the side of Chortiatis. It has a weighted average altitude of 125, and is 32 km away from Polygyros. It consists of three sections and occupies an area which belonged to the Monastery of Saint Anastasia by the donation of the Empress of Byzantium Theophans, who founded the monastery in 888 AD.

In the recent years the residents of the region fought against the Turks in the 1821 revolution. All the villages in the area were destroyed by the Turks in suppressing the revolution. Captain Stamus Happa’s self-sacrifice and heroism was touching as he struggled to the end for the salvation of the civilians who had fled to the Monastery of St Anastasia. Today, a monument of the sacrifice has been built there.

The settlement of Saint Anastasia was abolished in 1940, but was re-recognized in 1991 and annexed to the Galatistas community. In recent years, the settlement has experienced significant growth with an increase in the number of permanent residents, who have contributed decisively to its upgrading with infrastructure projects, tree planting, various actions and events.
