Stratoni

LocationStratoni

Stratoni is a seaside large settlement in the prefecture of Chalkidiki. The central church is dedicated to Agia Varvara. There are also two chapels, Agios Nikolaos and Agioi Theodoroi.

The development of tourism in the area is difficult because very close to the village are the facilities of mining companies. The area has been inhabited since ancient times and the mining activity in Stratoni and the surrounding villages dates back to 3,000 BC. . The 1962 excavations showed that Stratoni was built at the site of the ancient city of Stratonikis. This city is mentioned by Ptolemy Claudius, but mistakenly in the Sigilitikos Gulf.

Surveys have been made in recent years in a two-chamber hero (burial monument) and three statues, including a female, which are kept in the Archaeological Museum of Polygyros, were also found. Among the inscriptions found there, the monument dates back to the years of Christ.

Its foundation as a settlement dates back to the late 19th century and is directly related to the mining activity in the area. The rich deposits of mixed sulphide minerals, known from antiquity and Byzantine times, were the main source of the village. Since then people from the surrounding areas, and from other parts of Greece, have been gathering in Stratoni to work in the mines. The population increased significantly due to the refugees who fled here after the Asia Minor catastrophe. In 1932 the village suffered extensive destruction from the earthquake that centered on the bay of Ierissos. In the next few years it was rebuilt almost entirely.

The inhabitants of Stratonius, although they come from a large number of different regions, formed a single, harmonious ensemble and their love for culture has always been distinguished. Throughout history, Stratoni had many artistic events and local events. Climbing Showman, the exhibitions, the operation band and dance group, organizing spectacular carnival events, weekends and great concerts, are some examples of cultural tradition that Stratoni has to show. It continues today through the activity of local Associations.
