Porto Koufo

LocationPorto Koufo

Porto Koufo is a bay which forms a small natural port with the entrance orientated from South towards North. It is located at the Toronaios bay alongside the southwestern end of Sithonia in Halkidiki. It falls under the municipality of Sithonia.

It is one of the safest bays in Northern Greece which despite its entrance being alongside the western side of the peninsula (approximately 1,5 miles Northwest from the point where the cape Drepano or Ampelos is located) the bay makes a curve of 90 degrees towards North providing in such a way safe coverage in any type of weather (winds).

Its penetration point is approximately one nautical mile, while its entrance range, that spreads between the bays Drestinaga (North) and Pagona (South) reaches approximately 620m.

Porto Koufo is the largest natural harbour in Greece (in depth). The harbour was mentioned by the historian Thucydides. German submarines used it during World War II because of its geographical location and direct access to the Aegean Sea.

Porto Koufo is located in the municipality Sithonia, Chalkidiki.
