Portaria is a large lowland settlement and the homonymous municipal apartment in the Municipality of Nea Propontida in the prefecture of Chalkidiki. The name of the village is probably due to the large door located in the central square of the village, hence the original name Portara.

The village was built in the area where the ancient town of Spartolos was located. Near the village there are traces of two Roman settlements, which are probably identified with the ancient settlements of Ilio and Plemmy. The settlement was inhabited continuously throughout the Ottoman domination, while it was administratively subordinated to the temple of Kalamaria. During the Revolution of 1821 the inhabitants of Protaras offered in the fight. Panagiotis Pavlos and Georgios Athanasiou were the main fighters from the village. At the time of the establishment of the refugees in the area and until 1925 it was an administrative center where the new settlements were located.

The inhabitants of Portaria are mainly engaged in the cultivation of apricot trees. Named are the “apricot trees” of Portaria, which are exported abroad. Also on a large scale is the cultivation of olive, mainly of the green edible olive called “Chalkidiki” or “Goukouki”.

The village celebrates on August 15th, when the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is celebrated. The icon of Virgin Mary is dating back to 1840. The protector of the village is Agios Athanasios Athonitis, whose church was build in 1860, is located at the entrance of the village in a pine-tree forest and in honor of which are held every year at the beginning of May the athletic events “Aghiathanassia”, in which athletes participate athletes from all over Chalkidiki.
