Nea Skioni

LocationNea Skioni

Nea Skioni is a seaside tourist settlement stretching along its sandy beaches in the southern part of the peninsula of Kassandra. It is administratively owned by the Municipality of Kassandra of the Region of Central Macedonia. Notable is the church of Panagia Faneromeni, which dates back to the 16th century and is a member of the Patriarchal Monastery of Saint Anastasia Pharmakolytria Vasilikas

The name of the village is due to the ancient Skionis, which was a colony. Skioni survived during the Roman era, as evidenced by ancient literary sources and archaeological finds from the surrounding area.

Throughout the Ottoman domination, it was one of the twelve villages on the peninsula, and it was a gaffe of the Gazanpur Aga, which offered great tax breaks. The residents of Skionis (Tsapraniou) participated in the revolution of 1821. Major fighters of the Revolution of 1821 were Ioannis Aggelou, Nikolaos Stergiou, Georgios Anagnostopoulos, Gabriel Ioannou and Georgios Stamatis.

The present village was founded in 1918 by fishermen. The old village was located in the mountains and was called Tsaprani and was abandoned altogether in 1930. Part of the population of this village gave its life by fighting in the Asia Minor Front, the Epos of Albania in 1940 and the National Resistance against the German Occupation.

At the port of Nea Skioni, with the coastal pedestrian street, there are boats, fishing boats and excursion boats. In the areas of Saint Ioannis Skionis and Anemis, modern holiday complexes and country houses stretch along the coast.
