Kalyves

LocationKalyves

Kalyves is a seaside village, a large settlement of the municipality of Polygyros in the prefecture of Chalkidiki. It is located in the torone of Toroneos gulf between Gerakini and Olynthos, with a permanent population of more than 1,000 inhabitants, which in the summer grows because of the holiday makers. The protector of the village is Agios Modestos, who has a double celebration on 16 and 18 December. The saint is considered animal protector.

Kalyves was named after the multitude of farmhouses(kalyves) built by the Polygyrs in the area to cultivate their rich estates, such as silkworms in the past. The inhabitants are mainly engaged in agriculture. In Kalyves, in addition to the traditional olive groves that have existed for centuries, thousands of acres of olive groves have grown in recent years, which together with the neighboring rich olive groves of Olynthos constitute the largest center of production of the famous coarse grass throughout the prefecture of Chalkidiki. Thousands of tons of olives are produced in the region, providing extraordinary income to residents and supplying the many processing factories and oil mills in the region, while large quantities feed factories elsewhere.

On Kalyves beach there was the ancient city of Myciverna, independent and important, due to its position, the seaport of the famous ancient Olynthos. No systematic excavations have taken place in the area of the ancient city as well as the prehistoric settlement of Molyvopyrgos.
