Eleochoria

LocationElaioxoria

Eleochoria administratively belongs to the Municipality of Nea Propontida of the Region of Central Macedonia. Since ancient times the inhabitants have been engaged in agriculture and livestock farming. The settlement is well-known for its exuberant holmes and the evergreen olives (the latter are also found in Triglia). For the olive trees, their dating dates back to the 16th century, while the two hollies in the courtyard of the Eleochoria temple were dated back to 300 years.

The settlement was founded by the establishment of refugees (from the School of Thrace and Asia Minor) after 1922. In the settlement there were settled around 1930 Sarakatsan families. Its name owes it to the many olive trees. In 1960 an aqueduct was constructed. The emergence of artesian hot water sources has made Eleochoria known for the existence of a geothermal field. There are six small experimental greenhouses in Eleochoria. The results from these applications are optimistic and give impetus to more research on geothermal fields that have been identified but not thoroughly studied.
