LocationVourvourou

Vourvourou is a seaside village and holiday village of Sithonia, located only ten kilometers from Agios Nikolaos and at first glance enriches vision with a variety of pictures and calms the visitor with its natural tranquility. The area was formerly owned by the residents of the neighboring village, Agios Nikolaos. It produces oil, honey, tsipouro, wine and fish. The economy is based on tourism businesses. Its beaches (Vourvourou, Livari, Xifara, Karydi, Bara, Fava) and its natural beauties attract many visitors every year.

The area has been inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by the ruins of the pre-Byzantine temple of St. Andrew, found on the island of Diaporos. Also worth mentioning is the great wall, fortification of an unknown era, which cut the communication of the main body of Sithonia with the rest of Chalkidiki. In the 10th century, the region was referred to as “the Land of the Bourbouires” and was granted as a stake in the Xenophon Monastery of Mount Athos on a Byzantine Empire. In 1615 the owners of the area became the inhabitants of Agios Nikolaos. In the late 19th century the Monastery of Simonos Petras sold the area to Russian monks, but they were expelled by the residents of Agios Nikolaos.

The 1913 inhabitants of Mikro Souli of Serres, Paleokomi, Amphipolis and Lakovia resort to Vourvourou to escape the brutality of the Bulgarian conquerors of Eastern Macedonia. But there is a cholera epidemic, causing more than 110 people to die. Those who survived returned to their villages shortly before the outbreak of World War I.

Opposite Vourvourou and a short distance from the coast lies a cluster of islands, nine of them, most notably Diaporos. Diaporo is a large island, with a huge natural bay over 700 meters long, Kryfto, which serves as a dock for boats when the sea becomes turbulent. The bay ends up in shallow waters, which are always warm and suitable for winter swimmers. Most of the island is covered with pine forest.

The visitor can see the settlement of the teaching staff of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki which is an example of a model settlement on a pan-Hellenic scale as absolute respect for the environment prevails.

Also, from the top of Mount Itamos you can see the whole of Chalkidiki and the Aegean. The Aeronautical Monument is also interesting. There are many chapels in the settlement, such as Panagia Vourvourou, which celebrates on September 8, Prophet Elias and Theon.

In Vourvourou there is the fishing village, old fishermen’s houses that still host the fishermen of the area and which the visitor can buy fresh fish. Walking alongside the sea, you will reach the sharpened Xifara peninsula and then you will find yourself in a secluded cove, the “Karydi” beach.
