Mount Itamos in Sithonia, Halkidiki, is a “site of Community Protection” of the NATURA 2000 network. Itamos was named after the corresponding tree that grows there. The protected area of Itamos reaches 181,426 acres. The main feature of the area is the wooded hills and open forests. It is an important habitat for birds of prey, while in the forest of Dragoudeli there is a population of a deer species, which is threatened with extinction. Major threats to Itamos include fires, overbuilding and overgrazing.
