The Athos peninsula is a “Community Protection Site” of the NATURA 2000 network with code GR1270003. It is the eastern and heavier of the peninsulas of Halkidiki with an area of 232,794 acres and a higher altitude, the summit of Athos at 2,033 m. The area is wooded and consists of deciduous species, some conifers, mixed forests, shrubs and evergreen hard shrubs maqui). Mounts of bare and rocky ridges are formed at the top of Mount Athos. Lakes and rivers do not exist in Athos. Major mammals, birds and reptiles live in the area, while there are remarkable fish in the sea, such as barbusplebejus.
