Agios Panteleimon

Agios Panteleimon is a village and seat of the same name in the Municipality of Moudania in the prefecture of Chalkidiki. The locals came to the village from Vavdos in the early 20th century. The main occupation is agriculture. From a cultural point of view, the cultural community is active. At 2 km from the village, Karagatsia is located, with plane trees and running water. Its name comes from Saint Panteleimon, whose temple is in the settlement.

Most of the inhabitants are refugees and their ancestors come from Asia Minor, but also from Gallipoli and Tsanakale. Many refugee customs were relocated in the new village, most notably the burning of “Obrios”,  a custom also found in other parts of Greece. On the morning of the Great Saturday, the children surround a Jewish model in the alleys of the village. In the evening the Jewish model is burned on tree branches, which causes reactions due to the anti-Semitic character of the custom.
