Stanos

LocationStanos

Stanos is the third population in the municipal district of the Municipality of Arnaia and the second village in Greece in multi-child families. It borders north with the prefecture of Thessaloniki, the villages of Melissourgos and Nea Madito, south with Arnaia, west with Marathousa and east with Varvara. It is characterized by its well-kept appearance, the excellent climate (altitude of 520 m), the wonderful nature that surrounds it, the great plain to its west.

For the name of the village there are various versions, such as that it was named after Alexander the Great by that name, or from a metal or from the Latin adjective stanus-a-um, which means: the one that holds the water. Another version refers to the slopes, which in the old days were almost all the inhabitants. The inhabitants of Stanos participated in the revolution of 1821. Major fighters of the 1821 revolution were Jovanis Costas and Christos Economou.

Still a special feature of Stanos is the local patron saint of Ayia Chaido, whose memory is celebrated every year on September 1st. He is a new Martyr who was born and lived here during the Ottoman rule. The church was built in recent years in her honor, at the initiative of the Chalkias Nicholas and the help of the locals.
