Nea Potidea

LocationNea Potidaia

Nea Potidea or Nea Potidea (or simply Potidea) is a seaside large settlement and community in the Municipality of Nea Propontida in the prefecture of Chalkidiki. It is located 6 kilometers south of Nea Moudania, at the narrowest point of the peninsula and is the gate of the Kassandra Peninsula.

The churches are those of Saint Georgios, who is also a patron saint, as well as Panagia Faneromeni, the chapel of Saint Nikolaos and, in a short distance from the village, the temple of the Taxiarches (the monastery of the Holy Monastery of Doryarchios of Mount Athos). Nea Potidea is one of the most beautiful parts of Chalkidiki and the one with the greatest historical past.

Before the village there is a very thin strip of land in which a canal was built, the so-called Potidea Canal to serve ships that bombed the Toroneos Bay to fish fresh fish. The canal (opened in 1930) separates the peninsula from the rest of Chalkidiki and unites the two bays, Thermaikos and Toroneos, thus facilitating navigation. Its the main attraction of Nea Potidea. Both the western and the eastern side of Potidea are washed by the sea.

In 1923 refugees from Eastern Thrace and Kalolimno built Nea Potidea. The present village was built in the place of another, destroyed in 1821 by the Turks, after the Holocaust of Kassandra. Walking through the village along the canal, you will see the ancient city walls just next to the canal.

The eastern beach of the village with its excellent sea is flooded every summer by thousands of holidaymakers. From the bridge of the isthmus you can enjoy Thermaikos and Toroneos the two seas that embrace the village. At the two great seaside parks you can relax by strolling in the green.
