LocationNea Gonia

Nea Gonia is a village in the prefecture of Chalkidiki and the municipal district of the Municipality of Nea Propontida. Its location is to the east of Lakkoma. Nea Gonia, a semi-mountainous settlement with 480 inhabitants (together with the village of Neochoraki reaches 506), constitutes the Panorama of my village and still retains some remarkable traditional stone houses. Due to its excellent climate (temperate and healthy), many housing associations have established here an organized area for holiday housing. Three churches are built in the settlement (the Holy Church of the Assumption of the Virgin in which functions are performed, the Holy Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary and the Holy Church of St. George).

Shortly before reaching the village, on the left, on a turn, he meets the “Gyalakia” location with the traditional stone “Great Fountain”. On the northern outskirts of the settlement dominates the mill: an old windmill, preserved in a very good condition. Every year, in the chapel of ‘Saint Giorgis, there is a big feast in the open-air area, at the eastern outskirts of the village. On the way to N. Kallikrateia we meet the olive press of the region and in the “Tholos” area of N. Gonia, there is a Motto Cross track where Pan-Hellenic Championships are held.

The village was founded by refugees from Eastern Thrace following the Asia Minor Catastrophe. The Goniates brought to their new place the knowledge of viticulture as well as Oriental food. Although the village does not have tourist facilities (hotels or inns) it is a culinary and educational destination all year round.
